Former Lotte coach Choi Ki-moon becomes head coach of independent baseball team Paju Challengers

Choi Ki-moon (50), former battery coach of the Lotte Giants, takes the helm of the independent baseball team Paju Challengers.

Paju Challengers announced on the 26th, “We have appointed Coach Ki-moon Choi as the new head coach to lead the team in 2024.”

Coach Choi, who debuted in the KBO League in 1996, played for the OB Bears and Lotte Giants until 2010. After his retirement, he served as a battery coach for Lotte and NC Dinos.

Last year, he served as the Paju Challengers battery coach.

Coach Shin Cheol-in, who played for the Hyundai Unicorns, and coach Kang Min-gyu, who played for the LG Twins, will join Paju Challengers and assist Coach Choi.

Paju Challengers produced five professional players this year alone, including Do-hoon Hyun, Chan-hee Park, Tae-wook Kim, Joo-hyun Park, and Woo-young Jin. It is also the team that won the inaugural championship in the 2023 KBO Dream Cup Independent Baseball Tournament.

Coach Choi Ki-moon said, "I want to give everything I have and have experienced to players who have experienced setbacks and players who are full of passion for baseball, and I want to produce players who can play their roles not only in professional baseball but also in the Korean baseball industry as a whole." He expressed his feelings.

Meanwhile, the Paju Challengers Independent Baseball Team will accept player applications until November 10th and conduct the 8th player selection for 2024 at its home stadium, Paju Gyoha Baseball Stadium, on November 17th.

An official from the Paju Challengers said, "So far, we have been operating with players' dues. Starting from the 8th season in 2024, we plan to operate without collecting player dues so that players can focus entirely on baseball without being concerned about money."

Those selected through tryouts will participate in the Gyeonggi Provincial League starting January 29th next year through Shimonoseki field training and exchange matches with the Japanese independent league and Softbank 3rd team of social baseball.
